Description
Overview:
Château Jander 2018 – AOC Moulis-en-Médoc is an exceptional Left Bank Bordeaux red crafted with an artisanal touch and a deep respect for tradition. Grown on a small, historic 1.8-hectare vineyard in Moulis-en-Médoc, this wine reflects a philosophy of precision and passion. The estate has been organically farmed since 2012, and every step of the winemaking is handled with meticulous attention to detail – from manual harvesting and gentle soil management to patient barrel aging. The winemaker’s guiding belief is that “wine is the teacher of taste, the liberator of the mind, and the illuminator of intelligence,” a credo evident in the care and craftsmanship poured into this vintage.
Grape Variety & Winemaking:
This 2018 blend is composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, combining Merlot’s plush fruit character with Cabernet’s structure and depth. The grapes were hand-picked at optimal ripeness and double-sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with careful temperature control to preserve aromatic purity. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (approximately 80% new oak), imbuing it with added complexity and silky tannins. This extended barrel aging, along with the rigorous artisanal techniques, has yielded a wine of both power and finesse that truly expresses its gravelly, clay-limestone terroir.
Tasting Notes:
In the glass, Château Jander 2018 displays a deep garnet hue. On the nose, it unveils an inviting bouquet of white flowers and ripe orchard fruit, layered with exotic spice and subtle candied notes that emerge after a bit of aeration. As it unfolds on the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied, offering very ripe black fruit flavors (blackberry, plum) interwoven with accents of cocoa, sweet baking spices, and a touch of vanilla from the oak maturation. The texture is ample yet refined, with smooth tannins giving structure without aggression. The finish is long and harmonious, tapering off with a distinctive hint of graphite and minerality that speaks to its Médoc origins. Every sip reflects a balance of generosity and elegance, demonstrating both the robust character of the 2018 vintage and the winemaker’s attentive craftsmanship.
Food Pairing Suggestions:
Château Jander 2018 is a versatile food wine that elevates hearty dishes and fine cuisine alike. Its depth of flavor and refined tannins make it an ideal companion to classic French fare and savory creations. Recommended pairings include:
-
Aged Comté or Beaufort cheese – to match the wine’s nutty oak and fruity depth.
-
Duck breast with cherries – the wine’s ripe fruit and spice echo the richness of game and sweet cherry sauce.
-
Salmis of game (wild bird stew) – the robust, earthy flavors of game birds in red wine sauce harmonize with the wine’s complexity.
-
Roast capon stuffed with chestnuts – a celebratory dish whose savory and sweet elements are enhanced by the wine’s fullness and silky finish.
Aging Potential:
While already approachable and rewarding now, Château Jander 2018 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for up to 8–10 years. With a bit of cellaring, it will further soften and develop even more nuanced layers of cedar, truffle, and mellow spice. This wine embodies the best of Moulis-en-Médoc – a testament to thoughtful viticulture and winemaking that marries tradition with a modern, organic sensibility. Enjoy it in its youth for its vibrant fruit and perfume, or lay it down to let its true character evolve with time. Either way, this cuvée offers a genuine Médoc experience, carrying forward the estate’s enlightened philosophy that great wine nourishes both the palate and the soul.
